Certification Outline
Introduction to track basics:
Fixed gear (No brakes, No coasting).
Hands in the drops. When on top of bars (ONLY entering and exiting the track) keep thumbs behind handlebars.
3 kinds of pedal stroke: POWER to accelerate, NEUTRAL to float, POWER to slow down.
Never stop pedaling or you will be kicked by the crank arm.
The track is like an INTERSTATE — no one stops, no one changes lanes randomly.
Entry and exit must be performed safely only at Staging Area ramps.
Never approach turns under 18 MPH. Speed and G-Force make you stick to the track.
Pass , not under. Always respect the 2 foot rule, maintaining at least a 2 foot distance from other riders.
Elbows flexed. Head rotated up, pointing left, looking far ahead.
Staging Area:
Departing rails are the two separate rails closer to the bike racks. On your left when entering the track.
Landing rails are the 3 adjoining ones with CASCO sign in the middle. On your right when exiting the track.
Enter on the HOME STRETCH (between turns 4 and 1).
Entering the track, increase speed immediately from the staging area. Aim for the Red line (or just above it). DO NOT attempt to go straight up to the STAYERS LINE (BLUE) or higher.
Exiting the track, reduce your speed on turn 4 staying close to the RED/BLACK lines. Do not descend from the rail or stayers line to the apron. Merge onto the apron at the beginning of the home stretch and reduce speed CONSISTENTLY before turn 1. Stay to the left on the apron and proceed to the staging ramp at the end of the BACK STRETCH.
Certification
Youth (5-10) and cycling beginners (no cycling experience)
Start with 2 or 3 laps on the apron. If they are able to hold a line, proceed to cones.
Place cones on PURSUIT LINE. Stay at cones and ENCOURAGE riders to gradually accelerate/climb, go around the cone, and gradually decelerate/descend.
All riders start with 2 laps on the apron to get familiar with entry/exit.
FIRST time out on the track: increase speed and move up to sprinter’s lane, do 2/3 laps on (or just above) red line.
SECOND time out: at least 6 laps on the red line, focusing on holding the line consistently.
THIRD time out: 9/10 laps first on red line, then accelerate and move to black line at your highest speed.
FOURTH time out: 6/9 laps, first lap on red then move to the stayers line (BLUE).
FIFTH time out: 6/9 laps, first lap on RED, 2/3 on BLUE, then on RAIL, staying not higher than the dashed safety line. We consider RAIL the dashed line.
SIXTH time out: FLYING LAP – ½ lap on red, ½ on blue, 2 on rail, JUMP from top of turn 4, heading to the bottom of turn 1 and completing a full out lap. After the effort, do 2 laps cool down.
SEVENTH time out: 2/3 riders pace line for 15/20 laps (Easy yet not too slow).
EIGHTH time out: 6 laps pace line on BLUE line.
